The chatelaine is a belt pendant, used since the Middle Ages, when the security guard hung the keys to the castle gates on his waist. It thus became an almost feminine object, until the end of the 19th century, when several chains were hung on it, holding sewing tools, scissors, thimbles, pin holders, small pencils and notebooks, keys, stamps and usually a small simple Pocket watch in the middle.

There were two types of chatelaines, the common ones. used by governesses, housekeepers, seamstresses, etc. and the more elegant ones with enamels, stones, etc. in metal, gold and silver, used by rich ladies and ladies of the nobility. They then wore a French Pocket watch made of gold, stones and enamels, the key of the Pocket watch and the seals or some jewel or dependent.
